The Language of the Landscape
Living in Egypt is less of a vacation and more of an active engagement with history and humanity. It is a place that demands something of you before it gives back, much like the works of William Shakespeare. Many people struggle with Shakespeare in a classroom setting because it doesn't offer the passive ease of a television show; there is no remote control to skip the difficult parts. To get to the heart of the story, you have to navigate the thees, thous, and wherefores. You have to lean in and work for it, much like you have to lean into the rhythm of life along the Nile.
The Friction of the Endeavor
Egypt operates on a similar wavelength. It is a beautiful, complex "endeavor" rather than a simple excursion. To find the profound payoff—the layers of civilization and the staggering beauty of the landscape—you have to be willing to meet the environment on its own terms. This journey requires a certain level of grit. You have to be willing to get a little dusty, to let the heat settle into your bones, and to navigate the constant haggle of the marketplace. For many, that friction creates a level of discomfort that is hard to move past, yet it is that very friction that makes the eventual discovery so much more meaningful.
The Beauty of the Payoff
If you can work your way through that initial discomfort and the noise of the modern world, the reward is incomparable. Just as the effort put into Shakespeare reveals the most incredible stories ever told, the effort put into Egypt reveals a soul and a history that stays with you forever. It is an exchange; the land asks for your patience and your energy, and in return, it offers a glimpse into the eternal. It is only after we give of ourselves and step beyond our comfort zones that we truly begin to see the magic that has been waiting here for millennia. I really hope you are willing to make that small extra effort that Egypt requires, and I believe it will, just as Romeo & Juliet or Antony and Cleopatra, envelope your imagination like never before!!!
